| In the late 1700 A.D., the Hawaiian Islands was unified and the entire Kingdom was ruled by Kamehameha I and his descendants. In 1839, laws were formed and a constitutional monarchy was established by Kamehameha III, proclaiming certain royal high chiefs & princes of the realm to be selected to rule if the throne was left without an heir. In 1875, Kamehameha V died without an heir or successor, this enabled the election of a new king. King Lunalilo was the first to be elected & King Kalakaua was the second. Other royals eligible to rule were Princess Emma, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, Princess Elizabeth Kekaaniau & Princess Liliuokalani. Princess Lilioukalani became queen at the death of her brother, Kalakaua. On January 17, 1893, she was forced to abdicate her throne by a forming government with help from U.S.A. military forces without authorization from the U.S. Congress, clearly violating treaties between the U.S. and the Hawaiian Kingdom. Several attempts were made to re-establish the monarchy which lead to the imprisonment of the Queen for treason. In 1993, President Clinton, of the United States formally apologized for the wrong actions of the United States in the 1893 overthrow. Two royal lines survive today, one from the House of Kamehameha and one from the House of Kalakaua. These are ligitimate successors and heirs to the Hawaiian Throne by official orders of the rulers...these are their descendants. |
